- A foreign national planning to work in Thailand will need to obtain a Category B Non-Immigrant Visa, which is issued for work purposes before entering Thailand. What is Thailand Work Permit?
A Thailand work permit enables a person to legally work in Thailand. It is a legal document stating the person’s position, current occupation, job description, duration of employment, and details of the Thai company that they are working with. No foreign national is allowed to work in Thailand without a Thailand work permit.
Eligibility Criteria for Thailand Work Permit
To apply for a Thailand work permit, a foreign national will need -
- A Thailand non-immigrant B visa or a resident visa obtained before entering Thailand.
- They will also need an employer who will provide documents for the work permit, and proof that the occupation they will perform is not prohibited to foreigners.
For the employing company –
- They must have a registered capital of at least THB 2,000,000
- Must have paid income tax of at least THB 5,000,000 in the last 3 years to the Revenue Department.
- At least 50 local Thai nationals must be employed in the company
When to apply
- Before applying for a Work permit in Thailand you need to apply for a non-immigrant B visa and you should apply for this visa at least 30 days before you plan to travel to Thailand.

- Valid Thailand work visa/Non-immigrant Category “B” visa.
- Recent passport-sized photos as per the Thailand visa photo specifications.
- Departure card TM.6.
- Proof of sufficient funds.
- Professional testimonials.
- All academic qualification certificates.
- Certificates or licenses held by the applicant.
- Medical certificate.
- Employment Contract/Letter (stating your position, salary, and a general description of your job, work responsibilities, and the duties that you will perform).
- Ministry of Labour’s approval letter (the request for this has to be submitted to the Ministry of Labour by your employer at the Office of Foreign Workers Administration in the Department of Employment).
- Address proof in Thailand.
- Work address in Thailand.
- A copy of your Resume/CV.
- A copy of additional licenses or certificates (if required).
- Police clearance certificate.
- In case the applicant will be working as a school teacher: Acceptance letter from the institute +
Approval letter issued by the relevant government agency in Thailand (Office of the Basic Education Commission or Office of the Private Education Commission) + Schools profile along with the school’s business registration or school’s license.
- In case the applicant is married to a Thai national, the following documents should be provided as well: Marriage Certificate + Spouse’s identity card and household registration + A copy of every page of the applicant’s passport.
The employer has to provide the following documents:
- Company certificates and objectives.
- List of shareholders.
- VAT certificate.
- Financial statement.
- Employment agreement.
- Letter of employment stating the position and salary of the applicant.
- Withholding tax of the company.
- Factory License issued by the Ministry of Industry, Factory Department (if applicable).
- Social security payment filing.
- Four Thai employees per work permit.
Note: Additional information and documentation may be required depending on the applicant’s country of origin. All the documents submitted by the employer must have the Managing Director's signature along with the company’s seal.
Thailand Work Visa Cost
- The Thailand work visa for Indian cost THB 2,000 for single entry visa and THB 5,000 for a multiple entry visa.
- After you arrive in Thailand with a work visa you will be required to apply for a Thailand work permit. When you apply for a Thailand work permit you will be asked to pay the Thai work permit fee as follows: THB 750 for a Thailand work permit that is valid for up to 3 months, THB 1,500 for a Thai work permit with validity up to 6 months and THB 3,000 for a 1 year Thailand work permit.
Validity
- A foreigner entering Thailand on a Non-Immigrant B visa will be allowed to stay in the country for a maximum period of 90 days. Within the 90 days stay period, the applicant must apply for a Work Permit in Thailand and a Thailand visa extension at the Thailand Immigration Bureau.
- A Thailand work permit can be valid from 3 months to 1 year depending upon the nature of your work and the duration of your contract.

- The Thailand work visa processing time can take up to 10 working days.

General Work Permit Applications
- After receiving your non-immigrant visa to Thailand, you need to apply for a Work Permit after landing in Thailand. In general, Thailand work permit applications are made at the Labor Department. However, if the applicant’s employing company has total assets, and paid-up capital exceeding THB 30 million and if the applicant is applying for a management position, the work permit application can be made at the One-stop Service center.
- The applicant holding a non-immigrant type B visa will need to provide various documents both personal and corporate documents along with the Thailand visa application form.
- After getting approval, the applicant needs to appear in person with their passport and sign the Thai Work Permit book in the presence of the Labor Department officials. Once the permit is approved the Labor Department will then put a stamp on the back of your passport at the time of receipt.
- The Labor Department must be informed immediately if there is a change in address of the applicant or if the work permit is lost or damaged. In case the applicant plans to quit the current employer or they are let go from their duties they must return the work permit to the Labor Department within 7 days.
- Once the applicant receives their Thailand work permit they must carry it with them at all times. Please note that you can work with a specific employer and only perform the job mentioned on your work permit.
- All Thailand work visa holders must report their presence at the Immigration Department of Thailand every 3 months (90 days) in person, or via registered email. Failure in doing so can result in the cancellation of their visa.
