Depending on the purpose of travel, the Malaysian Government issues two types of visas to foreign nationals: (1) Visa Without Reference (VWTR) and (2) Visa with Reference (VWR).
- The Visa Without Reference (VWTR) consists of Single Entry Visa, Multiple Entry Visa and Transit Visa.
- Single entry visa (VWTR) is issued to a foreign national who wants to visit Malaysia for social visit. After traveling you can stay 30 days in Malaysia. This visa can be extended for two more months after arrival in Malaysia. The purpose of single-entry visa can be for a visit to meet friends and relatives, business trip,in order to examine job atmosphere or business opportunity in Malaysia, Student examinations and visiting any other embassy which is in Malaysia.
- Multiple entry visa (VWTR) is issued to government personals and business-related persons. This visa is valid for 3 months to 12 months and visitor can stay for 30 days on each visit. Extension of the visa is not allowed by the Malaysian immigration department.
- Transit Visa (VWTR) is issued to foreign nationals who require a visa to enter Malaysia on transit to other countries. Foreign nationals on transit without leaving the airportand who continue their journey to the next destination with the same flight do not require a transit visa.
- The visa with reference (VWR) is granted to students, persons with business-related intentions, investors, entrepreneurs, dependents or individuals seeking employment. To do this, you will need to first obtain approval from the Department of Immigration and include this in your application with the mentioned requirements, excluding the bank statement. Below are the different categories under this type of visa are Employment Pass, Dependent Pass, Social Visit Pass (Temporary Employment) (PL(KS)), Student Pass and Professional Visit Pass (Plik).
Documents required for visa application without reference (approval of visa is given by High Commission of Malaysia) are:
- Original passport
- Two (2) photocopies of passport
- Two (2) photocopies of visa application form (Form IMM.47)
- Two (2) passport size photograph of applicant
- Original air ticket and two (2) photocopies (confirmed and returned ticket)
- Bank statement / traveller’s cheques
- Invitation letter (if any)
- Payment of visa fee
Note: Visa Without Reference is required for purpose of social visit
Documents required for visa application with reference (visa will be issued after the application is being referred and approved by Department of Immigration Malaysia / Other Authority Agencies) are:
- Original approval letter from Department of Immigration Malaysia / other authority agencies and two (2) photocopies
- Original passport
- Two (2) photocopies of passport
- Two (2) photocopies of visa application form (Form IMM.47)
- Two (2) passport size photograph of applicant
- Original air ticket and two (2) photocopies
- Payment of visa fee
Note: Visa With Reference are required for student, employment, dependent and professional visit pass.
- The allowance of stay for these visa types is up to 30 days for each entry to Malaysia. The allowance of stay is totally the discretion of immigration officer at the entry point.
- Validity of the passport shall not be less than 9 months. 6 months validity is required for the requirement for entry and another 3 months for the minimum validity of visa.
- A visitor is also required to present proof of his financial ability to finance his/her stay in Malaysia together with a confirmed return ticket to another destination.
- The Malaysia visa processing time is usually between 5 to 7 working days from the day of submission. This only applies to working days and doesn’t include weekends and holidays.
- Applicants must apply at least 6 days in advance of the arrival date within a window of not less than 120 days.
- Applicants willing to travel to Malaysia need to apply for visa within 1 month from the date of travel.
