Many a times travelers require the assistance to navigate airports especially when the airport is quite large and the traveler is incapable of traversing on foot. This can be age-related where elders struggle with joint aches or someone with an injury or someone suffering from a chronic condition that gets in between their freedom to walk easily. The reasons could be many but there is hope for them. Here is when assistance through booking wheelchair at airport comes in.

All Indian and international airlines provide their passengers with disabilities, the convenience of wheelchair transportation to and from the airport gates. In addition to this, if your plane has a stop-over then too you can avail this benefit through booking wheelchair at the airport. Though wheelchair assistance regulations vary in different countries, still most major airlines provide this service in some form to its passengers. The question remains, how can booking wheelchair at airports be done? So, let’s dig into the mater.

1. Before the Date of Departure

When booking your flight, make sure to keep time between the connecting flights if booking the wheelchair for airport navigation. You will find your wheelchair waiting for you when you reach the airport. There are some airlines which provide wheelchair at the gate of the airport while others may provide the same at check-in. Please be ready for delays if traveling during festive or holiday season, when the concentration of travelers is heavy keeping the wheelchair attendant busy with other passengers.

For booking of a wheelchair at the airport, you need to call the airlines at least 48 hours prior to your flight’s departure. The customer care representative will put a note on your reservation record stating ‘needs special assistance’ and will alert the departure, arrival and transfer airports to keep a wheelchair ready. You should call the airline immediately after booking your flight since, in some airlines such as Air China, only a limited number of passengers with the requirement are allowed on board. Also, take a note that wheelchair assistants are not required to steer you to restaurants etc. To ensure that you carry your food with you.

2. At the Departure Airport

Make sure you arrive at the airport well before the scheduled time of reporting to allow yourself ample time for checking in, drop checked bags and go through security. Note that only a few airports offer wheelchair assistance to move you to the security queue. Before security-check, your attendant will put your hand baggage on the screening belt and you will be wheeled through the frisking counter. Your wheelchair will be checked too. And as you would be needing a wheelchair, you would probably be taken to board the plane first.

3. Between Flights

When your plane lands, you may have to wait until all the other passengers have disembarked. Since you have done booking wheelchair at the airport, a wheelchair assistant would be waiting for you who will thereafter assist you to your next flight. If you need to use a restroom before boarding your next flight, you can request your attendant and he/she will steer you to one on the way to the gate of the flight.

4. At Destination Airport

At your destination airport to your wheelchair assistant would be waiting for you to deplane you and will take you to the baggage claim section. Again, if you need to use the restroom you can be moved to the one along the way, on request.

5. Escort Passes

Some airports offer escort passes for your loved one to see you at the arrival or departure gate at the airport to pick you up or drop you. In case of absence of such a service, booking a wheelchair at the airport and moving along with the help of the attendant will be your only resort.

Disclaimer: Please note that it is always advisable to check the updated guidelines on assisted services with the specific airline you are traveling in, to avoid a disappointment and inconvenience at the airport.
