Russia, the world's largest country, offers a diverse range of travel opportunities, from hiking up the slopes of glacier-capped mountains to strolling down the shoreline of the world's oldest lake. Historical sites and cultural activities abound in the country's major cities. Whether you're walking across the steppes of Mongolia or visiting the grounds of Moscow's Kremlin, a trip to Russia is an adventure you won't soon forget. These top tourist sites in Russia might help you plan an unforgettable vacation to Russia.

  1. Trans-Siberian Railway: The historic Trans-Siberian railway runs from Moscow to Vladivostok, a city near Russia's borders with China and North Korea, and is part of the world's longest railway system. The road of the tsars was started in 1891 by Tsar Alexander III and finished in 1916 by his son, Tsar Nicholas II. The majority of travelers use the train as an overnight hotel when traveling from one location to another. There are first-, second-, and third-class sleepers aboard the train, with some having private restrooms and showers.

  2. Mount Elbrus: Mount Elbrus is a mountain in southern Russia's Caucasus Mountain Range. Elbrus, at 5,642 meters (18,510 feet), is one of the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each of the world's seven continents, drawing both experienced and inexperienced mountain climbers. While the mountain was produced by a volcano, it is considered inactive because no eruptions have been recorded. Visitors can ascend to the summit through a cable car system that can carry them up to 3,800 meters (12,500 feet).

  3. Valley of Geysers: The Valley of Geysers is the world's second largest geyser field, located on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East. Tatyana Ustinova, a local scientist, discovered the Valley of Geysers in 1941. Since then, it has grown in popularity as a tourist site in Kamchatka, attracting both scientists and visitors.

  4. Kizhi Island: Kizhi Island is well renowned for its amazing open-air museum, which is located in Karelia, a region in Northwestern Russia that borders Finland and the White Sea. Since the 13th century, Karelians have lived in the region, split between Eastern and Western civilizations. The Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior, which stands 120 feet tall and has 22 domes, is part of the museum's collection. Hundreds of wooden buildings, windmills, chapels, and barns are among the other tourist attractions. Craft demonstrations and folk ensembles are used to showcase rural culture.

  5. St Sophia Cathedral, Novgorod: Saint Sophia Cathedral is located within the grounds of the city's Kremlin in Novgorod, Russia's oldest city. The cathedral is Russia's oldest church building, standing 125 feet tall and ornamented with five beautiful domes. The Mother of God of the Sign, an image said to have protected Novgorod from siege in 1169, is one of the many historic religious objects on display at Saint Sophia Cathedral. The famed ornately carved gates of the cathedral are dating from the 12th century.

  6. Lake Baikal: Many Trans-Siberian railway passengers plan to stop at Lake Baikal, the world's deepest and oldest lake. Lake Baikal has over 20% of the world's fresh water. The 25-million-year-old lake is encircled by mountain ranges in Siberia. The lake is often regarded as one of the purest in the world. Lake Baikal, often known as the Pearl of Siberia, is home to various resorts, making it a popular vacation destination.

  7. Suzdal: Suzdal, the gem of Russia's "Golden Ring," ancient cities that the government has maintained as living museums of Russia's cultural history, was formerly the capital of multiple Russian princes. Suzdal is the place to visit if you want to see the best of Russia's old architecture, including onion-domed kremlins, cathedrals, and monasteries. The entire city, which dates back to 1024, is like a vast open-air museum that transports tourists back in time.

  8. Moscow Kremlin: For anybody visiting Moscow, the Kremlin is a must-see site. The walled enclosure, which contains the nation's key governmental offices, also holds four cathedrals from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as several noteworthy museums. The Armoury, which houses royal treasures from the past, and the Diamond Fund Exhibition, which has a collection of jewelry that includes a 190-carat diamond donated to Catherine the Great, are both located on the 250-acre grounds.

  9. Hermitage Museum: The Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and is a large museum of art and culture that displays the highlights of a collection of over 3 million pieces from all over the world. The treasures are housed in a six-building complex that includes the Winter Palace, which was once the residence of Russian rulers.

  10. Saint Basil's Cathedral: St. Basil's Cathedral, located in the centre of Moscow and built between 1554 and 1561, is one of Russia's most popular tourist destinations. Visitors are drawn to the cathedral's unusual architecture rather than the building's internal relics. The building, which was designed to approximate the shape of a full-fledged blaze, is not only unique to the period in which it was created, but also to any later period. St. Basil's Cathedral is unlike any other structure on the planet.
