Azerbaijan, a country of ten million people best known for its oil exports, is rarely on anyone's travel radar, but the so-called "Land of Fire" has plenty of surprises in store for those who dare to leave their comfort zones and visit. We will explore everything Azerbaijan has to offer with our comprehensive 2-week backpacking itinerary, which will connect Europe and Asia as part of the ancient historical Silk Road, with the north straddling the lush green landscape of the Caucasus Mountains and a hyper-modern metropolitan that is Baku, the capital city. Without further ado, let us begin our adventure by looking at the map of Azerbaijan to see where we will be visiting: When To Visit Azerbaijan? The greatest time to visit Azerbaijan is in the autumn, from late August to October, when the temperature (13 - 26°C) is moderate in the lowlands and moderate in the mountains, making it the ideal season to enjoy the country's natural beauty. Due to the country's semi-desert geography, the mid-summer months of June to early August may be rather hot in the lowland, with temperatures hovering around 30 - 35°C. Spring, from April through May, is not as bad, although rainfall is more likely during this time, which may make it difficult to navigate through the country's backcountry efficiently. In both the highlands and the lowlands of Azerbaijan, winter is bitterly cold. The temperature can be extremely harsh, with an average of -5°C in the highlands and 7°C in the lowlands, so if you want to enjoy the outdoors, I would avoid this period. How To Get To Azerbaijan? Azerbaijan has a well-established link with Istanbul and Ankara, so flying with Turkish Airlines from virtually everywhere in the globe is the easiest method to go to Azerbaijan. You can also fly into Turkey on other airlines and into Azerbaijan on low-cost carriers like Pegasus Airlines. There are no direct flights from the United States to Baku, but you can fly to Istanbul or Ankara on Turkish Airlines and then transfer to Baku. Within Europe, direct flights should be available from the UK via Azerbaijan Airlines, Paris via Air France, and Frankfurt via Lufthansa. There are no direct flights from Asia to Baku, however Turkish Airlines connects the region effectively enough that you can fly to Baku through Istanbul or Ankara. Other Middle Eastern airlines, such as Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Etihad Airways, are also excellent choices. To find a cheap flight to Baku, we recommend using Akbar Travels to compare and choose the best route and schedule. How To Get From Tbilisi, Georgia To Baku, Azerbaijan? If you're already in the Caucasus, you can take an overnight train from Tbilisi, Georgia to Baku. But it's a lengthy journey, spanning roughly 12 hours on a train that's seen better days. The train departs Tbilisi every day at 8:35 p.m. and arrives in Baku at 9:00 a.m. the next day. You won't be passing through immigration until after 11 p.m., so don't get warm and ready for the night until then. A 3rd class sleeper train ticket should cost roughly 15 USD (24 AZN) (open plan). Instead, choose a 2nd or 1st class sleeper seat if you want a 4 person/2 person private compartment. How To Get From Baku Airport To The City Center? The Airport Express bus runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from the airport to Baku Central Station and vice versa. From 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Airport Express runs every 30 minutes. It runs every 40 minutes from 7 to 9 p.m., then every hour from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. To board the bus, you'll need the BakuCard electronic payment, which may be obtained from a machine near the bus stop on the left-hand side of the Terminal Exit in front of the airport. There are two options available from the machine: a 2-times paper card for the Airport Express and a plastic card that can be topped up and used on city buses/metros/museums, among other things. The plastic card will cost 2 AZN, and you can then load it with money. After you receive the card, take it to the bus and touch it on the machine to check how much money has been withdrawn from your card as well as the remaining amount. The Airport Express should take you to the 28 May bus stop immediately in front of Baku Central Station in about 45 minutes; from there, you can walk or take a taxi, preferably using Uber or Bolt. How To Get Around Azerbaijan? There are a variety of ways to get about Azerbaijan, and we'll use them all on this trip. The following are the most prevalent modes of transportation in Azerbaijan: Points to Consider: The majority of the signs on buses and on booking websites may be in Azerbaijani, thus here are all of the city names in Azerbaijani to help you out: Baku: Bakı Quba: Quba Sheki: Şəki Ganja: Gəncə Nakhchivan: Naxçıvan Trains: By far the most convenient and cost-effective mode of transportation in the city. Azerbaijan's railroads have been renovated with European-style double-deck train cars; however, the cost is only slightly higher than that of a marshrutka or bus. However, they do not operate as frequently as buses and are frequently completely booked, thus if the train is not available, marshrutkas or buses can be used instead. Marshrutkas: Marshrutkas are the most cost-effective mode of transportation in the country. These small Soviet-era minivans operate on a bus schedule, departing from a bus terminal (all depart from Baku International Bus Terminal), and pricing varies based on the city to which you are traveling. You pay the driver directly. They are not the most comfortable, since they frequently cram a large number of people, baggage, and even cattle onto the small seating area, but they are inexpensive, they go everywhere, and they are one of the finest ways to explore the countryside and see how the local’s travel. Buses: Large buses leave from the Baku International Bus Terminal, although you may need to reserve a seat in advance because some routes, such as Sheki and Ganja, might fill up quickly. You can either order a taxi using Bolt or ride the metro to Avtovaghzal Station for 0.3 AZN per trip to get to the bus terminal from Baku city center. Cab: Taking a taxi is the most convenient but also the most expensive option. Within cities such as Baku and Ganja, you can use Bolt, a taxi-calling app that is both cheaper and more dependable than using a normal taxi. On use Bolt in Azerbaijan, grab a local sim card at the airport and download Bolt to your phone. Then type in your destination, request a vehicle, and you're off. Your only choice for getting to isolated regions like Khinaliq or surrounding Nakhchivan is to hire a cab driver, which can cost anywhere between 60 and 90 AZN each day depending on the distance. These taxi-for-hires can be simply arranged through your lodging. Where to go in Azerbaijan? Baku is a hyper-modern metropolis that will change your image of Azerbaijan the moment you arrive. The Shirvanshahs' Royal is a 15th-century palace complex that includes the palace, burial vaults, and the shah's mosque. The Heydar Mosque, a massive mosque built with peculiar stones in the Shirvan-Absheron architectural architecture, is located in the city's northern outskirts. The Gobustan and Absheron tour (all-inclusive) takes you from Baku to Gobustan, including mud volcanoes, Yanar Dag (Burning Mountain), and Ateshgah Fire Temple. Gobustan is an excellent spot to learn about the prehistoric people that have lived in this area since the eighth millennium BC. Another great thing to view around Baku is mud volcanoes. The mud volcanoes here are unique in that they are one of the few mud volcanoes in the world that are really chilly, thanks to the Caspian Sea's water. The Hindus, Sikhs, and, most importantly, Zoroastrians frequented Ateshgah Fire Temple, a 17th-century center of worship. BEST AZERBAIJAN TOUR PACKAGES RECOMMENDED BY AKBAR TRAVELS.
