Oman Air is the country’s national airline. It conducts domestic and international passenger services, as well as regional air taxi and charter flights, from Muscat International Airport in Seeb, Muscat.
Oman Air was established in 1993. The airline first flew from Muscat to Salalah in March on a wet-leased Boeing 737-300 from Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services (AWAS). The airline’s first international flight, also utilizing a Boeing 737-300, was to Dubai in July of the same year. Other destinations were swiftly added, with flights to Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) beginning in November, Kuwait and Karachi in January 1994, and Colombo in October. Two Airbus A320s were wet-leased from Singapore’s Region Air in 1995 to replace the 737s. Services to Mumbai, Dhaka, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Chennai were launched between 1995 and 1997. Oman Air was accepted into the Worldwide Air Transport Association, a trade association for the international aviation industry, in October 1998. (IATA). Gwadar, Peshawar, Jeddah, and Al Ain were added to the airline’s ever-expanding route network by the end of the following year, though the latter two, along with a slew of other destinations, were discontinued in 2000.
As COVID-19 spreads, Oman Air declared in February 2021 that it would cancel fleet expansion plans due to decreasing demand. Chairman Mohammed Al-Barwani declared that the fleet would be reduced from 50 to 36 planes. A few non-profitable routes, such as Athens and Casablanca, are also being phased out. Oman Air operates a network of 50 destinations in 27 countries from its principal base in Muscat as of July 2020. With 11 destinations, India is the country that receives the most services.
Oman Air’s fleet comprises of 4 Airbus A330-200, 6 Airbus A330-300, 15 Boeing 737-800, 5 Boeing 737-900ER, 8 Boeing 737 MAX 8, 2 Boeing 787-8 and 7 Boeing 787-9.
